III: The Degradation of Documentation

"The margins burn, the center holds, but for how long?" — Bureau Memo, Das Schweigende Archiv

In Mnesarete, documentation is a fragile thing. Documents degrade in predictable ways: margins burn, leaving [CONSUMED] gaps where crucial details once were; ink fades into [DEGRADED] smudges; entire pages crumble into [ILLEGIBLE] fragments. Livia Dorn, the silent transcriptor, works in the Ashen Promenade, her hands moving ceaselessly as she attempts to preserve what can still be read. The Der Gefaltete Spiegel, a memory parlor in the Mnemosyne Quarter, uses folded mirrors to capture fragmented reflections of the past, but even these are subject to degradation, their surfaces marred by tarnished patches.
