II: The Competing Accounts

"Truth is a mosaic, and each tile is a lie." — Recovered Log, Das Verblassende Amulett

Two theories dominate the discourse: according to Veyra Solren, Mnesarete is a city built on the ruins of itself, its history a palimpsest of erased and rewritten narratives. Illyria Voss, on the other hand, argues that the city is a construct of collective amnesia, its inhabitants forgetting their origins to escape some unspeakable truth. The Das Verblassende Amulett, a hexagonal shrine in the Mnemosyne Quarter, holds fragments of these debates etched into its weathered copper walls. The shrine’s interior is lined with mirrors that reflect fractured images of the past, each shard a competing account of what came before.
