"The officer is a different stranger every night. The ledger is the only thing in Scharte that treats them as one person." – the smuggler

THE GATE BOOK OF SCHARTE Three pages of the smuggler's ledger, bought for the Book by the officer of the night, Bureau number 4019, at the price of his own page. I went down to the cellar before the number was called, against the keeper's advice, because I had been told that there was a book about officers and I wanted to know what it said about me before I had done anything. It said nothing about me yet. The smuggler wrote my page while we talked and sold it to me at the end for the price of copying three others into this one. The Bureau will decide whether that was a bribe. I record that I took nothing before the word, which is the rule, and that the smuggler smiled when I said so, which is his. PAGE 1601. Officer, Bureau number 3341. Took: a drink. Refused: money (twice), a night with the landlady's daughter, the page about himself. Said, refusing the money: I am here for one night and you are here for life, and I will not give you a reason to remember me. Let through: three. Note...
