A squat stone tower on the outer reef of Deepreach, the last lamp of the Reach, kept burning day and night so the boats of the Fleet can find their way back out of the Blind Reach. Below it, the diving station: a crane, a pump, a brass helmet on a hook, and a ladder going down into water no lamp has ever lit. On some nights the keepers see a light far out where there should be none, and write it in the log.
