A bed in the Conservatory's northern aisle that is raked, labelled and watered once a week and in which nothing grows: it is waiting for Skerran, whose last speaker is still alive. Beside it, through a door in the glass, the small whitewashed lodge where that speaker lives as Last Speaker in Residence: two rooms, a stove, a wicker chair she has carried out to sit beside her own bed.
