Where the tower's glass is made. A yard of brick furnaces and long sheds beside the Conservatory where the glaziers sleep in their boots, because a storey is never announced in advance: when the bell in the spire rings after a graft, the furnaces are lit, the panes are blown and cut by night, and by dawn the spire is one storey taller. The glaziers are paid by the storey and are the only people in the city who are rich from the Concordance. Their foreman keeps a chalk tally on the furnace wall. ...
