The Wax Room holds four thousand phonograph cylinders and their descendants, copies of the field recordings made since 1900 of people speaking languages that would not outlive them: Ishi telling the story of the Wood Duck, Tevfik Esenç counting in Ubykh, a woman on the Isle of Man singing to a child.
