A long hospital hall under a painted timber vault, in the manner of the Hôtel-Dieu at Beaune: two rows of curtained beds facing an altar at the far end. Women whose stones have blanched lie here, pale and soft-edged, half-remembering their own names. The only treatment is reading. Volunteers come from the Garden every evening and read the patients' stones aloud by their beds; sometimes colour returns, sometimes it does not. The Ward is overfull.
